FAQ’s
What Makes The Body Lab Different?
Most clinics focus on the area that hurts.
At The Body Lab, we focus on understanding why it hurts.
Rather than viewing the body as a collection of separate parts, we assess how different systems interact. Foot function influences posture. Posture influences movement. Breathing influences posture and nervous system regulation. Walking influences everything.
Our goal is to understand how the whole system functions so that treatment is directed towards meaningful change rather than temporary symptom management.
What Conditions Do You Help With?
People commonly attend The Body Lab for:
Foot pain
Heel pain
Plantar fasciitis
Achilles pain
Bunions
Ankle stiffness
Knee pain
Hip pain
Back pain
Neck tension
Headaches
Jaw tension and TMJ symptoms
Poor posture
Walking difficulties
Balance issues
Breathing concerns
Sleep-related symptoms
Sports injuries
Persistent movement restrictions
We focus less on diagnostic labels and more on understanding the movement, postural and functional patterns that may be contributing to symptoms.
Do I Need A Referral?
No.
You can book directly without a referral.
If additional investigations or collaboration with another healthcare provider would be beneficial, we can discuss this during your assessment.
What Happens During My First Appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, history and goals.
We then perform an assessment based on your individual presentation. This may include movement analysis, walking assessment, posture evaluation, breathing assessment, strength testing, balance testing or other relevant examinations.
Once the assessment is complete, we discuss our findings, explain what may be contributing to your symptoms and outline a plan moving forward.
Where appropriate, treatment may begin during the initial consultation.
Do You Treat The Whole Body Or Just The Area That Hurts?
The whole body.
Although we always pay attention to the area that hurts, we are equally interested in understanding why that area became overloaded in the first place.
For example, heel pain may be influenced by foot mechanics, ankle mobility, walking patterns, hip function or load management. Neck tension may be influenced by breathing, posture, jaw mechanics or movement habits.
Understanding these relationships is a key part of our approach.
What Is The Foot Reset System?
The Foot Reset System is designed to assess and improve foot function, walking mechanics, balance and force transfer throughout the body.
Rather than focusing solely on foot pain, we assess how the foot, ankle, knee, hip and pelvis work together during movement.
The goal is to help the body move more efficiently from the ground up.
What Is The Posture & Core Reset System?
The Posture & Core Reset System focuses on how the spine, ribcage, pelvis and core work together during movement.
Rather than trying to force the body into perfect posture, we assess how movement, breathing, strength and mobility influence posture naturally.
The goal is to improve function rather than simply change appearance.
What Is The Better Airway System?
The Better Airway System examines the relationship between breathing, airway function, tongue posture, jaw mechanics, neck function, posture and nervous system regulation.
We assess how these systems interact and whether airway function may be contributing to symptoms such as poor sleep, jaw tension, headaches, fatigue or breathing difficulties.
Do You Use Acupuncture?
Yes.
Acupuncture may be incorporated into treatment where appropriate.
Rather than being used in isolation, acupuncture is often integrated with movement therapy, rehabilitation, breathing work and other treatment approaches depending on the individual’s needs.
Do You Use Hands-On Treatment?
Yes.
Depending on your presentation, treatment may include manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisation, craniosacral therapy, acupuncture or other hands-on approaches.
However, treatment is rarely limited to what happens on the treatment table.
Education, movement and self-management strategies are usually important parts of the process.
Do I Need Exercises?
In most cases, yes.
The body changes through repetition.
Exercises help reinforce the improvements made during treatment and provide opportunities to develop new movement patterns between appointments.
Recommendations are individualised and based on your specific findings.
How Many Appointments Will I Need?
This varies considerably.
Some people attend for a single assessment and movement plan.
Others require a short series of treatments to address a specific issue.
More complex or longstanding problems often benefit from a longer-term approach.
Following your assessment, we will discuss realistic expectations and provide recommendations based on your goals.
Can You Help If I’ve Had Pain For Years?
Yes.
Many people who attend The Body Lab have been dealing with symptoms for months or years.
Longstanding symptoms often involve complex adaptations that have developed over time. While there are never guarantees, understanding how the body has adapted often provides valuable insights into why symptoms have persisted.
Do You Work With Athletes?
Yes.
We work with recreational exercisers, runners, walkers, gym members and competitive athletes.
Many athletes seek help not only because of pain but also because they want to improve movement efficiency, performance and recovery.
Do You Work With Older Adults?
Absolutely.
Many older adults attend to improve mobility, balance, confidence and overall movement quality.
The goal is often not simply reducing pain but improving function and maintaining independence.
Do You Work With Children?
In some cases, yes.
Depending on the presentation, assessments may include walking mechanics, posture, breathing patterns or movement development.
Please contact the clinic if you would like to discuss whether an appointment is appropriate.
Can Poor Breathing Affect Posture?
It can.
Breathing influences ribcage movement, spinal mechanics, muscle activity and nervous system regulation.
When breathing patterns become inefficient, the body often develops compensations that may influence posture and movement.
Can Walking Affect The Rest Of The Body?
Absolutely.
Walking is one of the most repetitive activities we perform.
Every step involves coordination between the feet, ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, spine and upper body.
Changes in walking mechanics can influence how forces are distributed throughout the body and may contribute to symptoms elsewhere.
Do You Offer Online Consultations?
Yes.
Telehealth consultations are available for movement assessments, exercise programming, gait analysis reviews and follow-up support.
Many clients successfully work with us remotely from around Australia and internationally.
What Should I Wear To My Appointment?
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily is ideal.
Shorts, activewear or clothing that allows observation of posture and movement patterns is generally recommended.
What Is The Goal Of Treatment?
The goal is not simply to reduce symptoms.
The goal is to help you understand how your body functions, identify the factors contributing to your symptoms and create a pathway towards better movement, improved function and greater confidence in your body.
Because at The Body Lab, we don’t just look at where it hurts.
We assess how the whole system functions.
