What Happens During Your First Appointment?

Every journey at The Body Lab begins with understanding.

Your first appointment is designed to help us understand how your body functions as a whole before deciding what needs to change. Rather than focusing only on the area that hurts, we’ll take the time to understand your story, assess how your body moves and identify the movement relationships that may be contributing to your symptoms.

By the end of your appointment, you’ll understand what we’ve found, why it matters and have a clear plan for moving forward.

Step 1 — Understanding Your Story

Every person has a story, and that story often starts long before the pain began.

We’ll spend time discussing your health history, previous injuries, surgeries, work, hobbies, sporting background and any treatments you’ve already tried. Depending on your presentation, we may also explore your early years, including birth history, childhood development or significant events that may have influenced the way your body has grown and adapted over time.

We’ll also talk about what you’re hoping to achieve. Whether your goal is to reduce pain, improve performance, return to sport or simply move more comfortably, understanding where you’ve come from and where you want to go provides the foundation for everything that follows.

Step 2 — Understanding How Your Body Moves

Movement is one of the most important parts of your assessment because it tells us what movement options your nervous system has available.

Every movement you make, whether you’re walking, bending, reaching, breathing or standing, is coordinated by your nervous system. When movement becomes restricted through injury, surgery, pain or long-standing habits, your nervous system doesn’t stop you moving. Instead, it finds another way to complete the task using the movement options that are still available.

Over time, those alternative strategies become your normal way of moving. They often work remarkably well for years, but they can also place extra demand on other parts of the body and gradually contribute to stiffness, reduced mobility or recurring symptoms.

Our assessment is designed to identify which movement options have become limited, how your body has adapted around those limitations and where the greatest opportunity exists to restore healthier, more efficient movement.

Depending on your presentation, your assessment may include walking analysis, foot function, spinal mobility, ribcage movement, pelvic control, breathing mechanics, balance, cranial movement, jaw function, tongue function and overall movement control.

Every assessment is individual. We don’t work through a fixed checklist. We assess what’s relevant to you and the goals you’ve shared with us.

Step 3 — Connecting the Dots

Once we’ve completed the assessment, we’ll explain our findings in clear, everyday language.

Rather than giving you a list of isolated observations, we’ll connect the dots. We’ll explain how different parts of your body influence one another, which movement relationships appear to be driving your symptoms and why your body has adapted the way it has.

This is often the point where people say, “That finally makes sense.” They begin to understand why previous treatments may have reduced pain for a while but never fully addressed the underlying movement pattern.

You’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and we’ll make sure you leave understanding your body rather than simply leaving with a diagnosis.

Step 4 — Your Personal Restoration Plan

Once we understand how your body is functioning, we’ll develop a personalised Restoration Plan.

Your plan is built around your goals, your assessment findings and the movement relationships that are most important for you.

Together we’ll discuss:

  • The key findings from your assessment.

  • The movement relationships contributing to your symptoms.

  • Which Restoration System, or combination of Restoration Systems, is the best place to begin.

  • The treatments we recommend and why.

  • Your home program and the first steps you can begin straight away.

  • The expected timeframe and likely number of sessions required to achieve your goals.

Every recommendation is tailored to the individual because no two people move, adapt or recover in exactly the same way.

What You’ll Leave With

By the end of your appointment you’ll leave with much more than a diagnosis.

You’ll have:

  • A clear understanding of how your body has adapted.

  • An explanation of the movement relationships influencing your symptoms.

  • A personalised Restoration Plan.

  • Practical advice and exercises to begin immediately, where appropriate.

  • A realistic understanding of what needs to change and the pathway we’ll take together.

Our goal is for you to leave feeling informed, confident and clear about your next steps.

How Long Is the Appointment?

Your first appointment is approximately 90 minutes.

This gives us the time to understand your history, complete a comprehensive assessment, explain our findings and develop a personalised Restoration Plan without feeling rushed.

How Should I Prepare?

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily, such as activewear or sportswear.

If you have relevant scans, reports, orthotics or footwear, feel free to bring them along. They may help provide additional context, although they are only one part of the overall picture.

Most importantly, come prepared to ask questions. We want you to leave understanding not only what we’ve found, but why it matters and how we’re going to work together to help you move, breathe and function more efficiently.

Ready to Begin?

Your first appointment isn’t about finding a quick fix.

It’s about understanding how your body functions, identifying the movement relationships that matter most and creating a personalised Restoration Plan that gives you a clear direction forward.

If you’re ready to understand your body differently and begin restoring healthier movement, we’d love to help.
