Posture & Movement Therapy Canberra
Understanding Why Pain Keeps Returning — and What Needs to Change
Many people come to The Body Lab Canberra after trying other treatments.
Often those treatments helped at first.
But over time:
• the pain returned
• the problem shifted somewhere else
• posture slowly collapsed
• walking began to feel heavier or less stable
When this happens, it doesn’t usually mean the body is broken.
More often, it means the underlying movement pattern hasn’t changed.
At The Body Lab, we focus on understanding how your body moves — especially how your feet, joints, and posture work together during standing and walking.
Because when movement improves, many recurring problems begin to settle.
A Different Approach to Pain and Posture
Most treatments focus on the painful area.
For example:
• treating the back when the back hurts
• treating the knee when the knee hurts
• treating the foot when the foot hurts
But the body works as a connected system.
Many posture and pain problems begin lower in the body, particularly in how the feet interact with the ground and how movement travels through the limbs and spine.
When movement is missing or mistimed:
• joints compensate
• muscles overwork
• posture adapts
• load shifts to structures that were not designed to absorb it
Over time this can lead to recurring pain or stiffness.
At The Body Lab we assess how movement flows through the entire body, rather than focusing on isolated symptoms.
Problems This Approach Often Helps
People often seek posture and movement therapy when they experience:
• recurring back pain
• ongoing knee discomfort
• persistent heel or foot pain
• stiffness when standing or walking
• posture gradually collapsing over time
• pain that shifts from one area to another
Many of these problems are connected to how the body distributes load during movement.

How the Assessment Process Works
The goal of your first appointment is clarity.
Not commitment.
We want to understand how your body is moving and where stress is accumulating.
Step 1 — Understand How Your Body Moves
Your first session includes a detailed movement assessment.
This may include:
• walking gait analysis
• joint motion testing
• posture assessment
• evaluation of foot interaction with the ground
• assessment of how load travels through the limbs and spine
This helps identify where movement may be restricted or inefficient.
Often the painful area is not the starting point of the problem.
Step 2 — Restore What’s Missing
Treatment focuses on restoring the movements your body needs.
Depending on what the assessment reveals, this may include:
• hands-on joint mobilisation
• movement retraining
• simple mobility work
• strength where it supports better movement
• acupuncture or dry needling when appropriate
Many people notice changes quickly — not because something was “fixed”, but because the body received the input it was missing.
Step 3 — Reinforce Change Between Sessions
After each session, you receive a clear follow-up email outlining:
what we worked on
why it matters
what to focus on now
what not to worry about yet
This keeps things simple and avoids overload.
The goal is understanding — not endless exercises.
Step 4 — Progress as Your Body Adapts
As your movement improves, priorities change.
For example:
• restoring foot mobility before posture work
• improving spinal movement before strength
• addressing coordination before loading
The body adapts progressively.
There is no rush.
The body adapts on its own timeline.

A Focus on Long-Term Change
Many clients appreciate this approach because it focuses on improving movement rather than managing symptoms indefinitely.
Early sessions may occur more frequently while the body adapts.
Over time, as movement improves, appointments naturally space out.
The aim is always the same:
